On Monday, April 8, 2019, the City of Palacios Police Department contacted the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office (SCSO) and requested assistance in apprehending a suspect who was wanted in a violent aggravated sexual assault case that occurred in their city.

The SCSO began gathering information on the suspect, Rogelio Avila Romero, 55, of Joaquin and requested the assistance of Constable Precinct 3, Roy Cheatwood and Deputy Constable Newton Johnson in locating Romero. Due to the nature of the charge, the suspect was known to have violent tendencies.

SCSO Lieutenant Del Birdwell, along with SCSO deputies Ruth Gonzales and Tanner Peace met Cheatwood and Johnson Wednesday, April 11 and traveled to the 1200 block of FM 139 in Joaquin where Romero was known to reside.

As officers approached the residence, a vehicle pulled out of the driveway. After a positive identity was returned, officers initiated a traffic stop and located Romero in the vehicle. Romero was arrested transported to the Shelby County Jail.

The SCSO would like to extend their thanks to Constable Cheatwood and Deputy Constable Johnson for their assistance in this situation.
